I've heard that plastics won't break down even after ten thousand years, or something like that. I had written a scene in my futuristic novel about all the plastics still being around, but ended up cutting it. It may make an appearance in the next novel, though. I imagine beaches in the future will be made up of pulverized plastics that wash up onshore.
@L.G.: quite unexpected, but it made a lot of sense this way. :-) You're probably right about plastics & beaches in the future, but there's a good chance there will be no people around to see it, by then.
